Purple Stride walk raises money for cancer research

MADISON (WKOW) -- Hundreds of people gathered in Madison on Sunday to fight one of the deadliest types of cancer.

The Purple Stride Run/Walk at Warner Park is one of about 50 across the nation raising money for pancreatic cancer research.

It's a deadly disease: the five-year survival rate is just six percent.

Finding a cure is a mission for many people with family affected, like Niketa MIller, whose grandmother died from pancreatic cancer in 2009.

"Just seeing all these people here, it means the world to me because you can always get caught up in yourself and think it's only your family that's going through it, but when you see these people you know you're not the only one and you're here for one common purpose..to raise hope," says Miller.

Meteorologist Brian Olson was emcee Sunday morning. The event supports the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
