Tips on starting a business

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Starting a business can be tough, but every year more and more entrepreneurs embrace the challenge and make it work.

Madison College business instructors Jeff Noble and Jill Huizenga say the most important thing to do when starting a business is research.

"The best place to start is really about self awareness," Huizenga said. "Knowing what your interests are, what your hobbies are, and what you do best at."

Noble says the most common mistake people make it trying to do too much too fast.

"Getting ahead of themselves, and not having a business plan, not focusing on really the essential parts of that plan," Noble said.

Huizenga said you can avoid most common mistake just by having a good, solid business plan.

"A business plan deals with things like proper financing, timing, marketing, things like that," Huizenga said. "And it's really essential to put the proper research into a good working business plan prior to its launch."

Noble says to focus on your plan, do some networking, and gain work experience in that field.

"Certainly the businesses that we do the best with are those that we know the most about," Noble said. "So the more research you've done, the more familiar you are with that business and plan the more success you'll have."
