Dead deer piling up along Eau Claire and Chippewa Co. roads

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The DNR is asking for the public's patience as it works to solve a pesky roadside problem.

You may have noticed an extra amount of dead deer as you drive along Eau Claire and Chippewa County highways. The DNR says that's because the Birchwood man hired last fall to pick up the carcasses has fallen way behind.

There are now at least a hundred deer between the two counties that need to be picked up. According to the contract, the deer are supposed to be picked up two business days after they are reported. But the DNR says it knows of several deer hit back in November that haven't been moved since.

"As the temperatures start warming up and people are driving with their windows down, the stench for those rotting carcass can be quite unpleasant and so the amount of public calls that we've had this spring has been more than I can remember," says Jeremy Peery, a Conservation Warden and Supervisor for the DNR.

The DNR says it's working to cancel the current contract hire someone else, but that process could take up to a full month.  The DNR says they don't have the manpower to remove the deer themselves and it wouldn't be a good use of fish and game dollars. The only time they would go out is if it becomes a public safety issue.
