Search to resume for missing canoeists

EAU CLAIRE (WKOW) – A search for two missing canoeists will resume Wednesday morning on the Chippewa River in Eau Claire.

Authorities began looking for two men whose canoe capsized around 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.

According to our affiliate, WAOW-TV, a kayaker saw two men hanging onto a canoe.  The kayaker tried to throw a rope to help them, but the kayaker also capsized due to fast moving water.  When the kayaker resurfaced, the men were gone.

The kayaker told authorities the two missing men were about 20 years old.

Rescue crews say the river is extremely dangerous because the water levels are so high and the water is brutally cold.  They have not found the bodies, but did find an orange life-vest down the river.  According to WAOW-TV, fire crews believe only one canoeist was wearing a life vest.
