State warns of phone scam targeting Hispanics

MADISON (WKOW) – The state of Wisconsin is warning people about a phone scam that is apparently targeting Hispanic customers.

The state says it has seen an increase in complaints from Spanish-speaking customers who have been contacted about the scams in recent days.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says the callers claim to work for the local electric company and say they are collecting payment for past due statements.   The caller tells the victims to wire money or put money on a prepaid debit card to avoid having their power shut off.

Anyone who receives a phone call is encouraged to hang up and contact the local utility company to confirm their account balance.  They should also report the scam to the police and their utility provider.
