Wild horses available for adoption in May

DECORAH, IA (WKOW) -- Approximately 40 wild horses will be up for adoption May 17-18 at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds in Decorah, Iowa.

The U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management is leading the adoption.

The horses range in age from yearling to 5 years old.

Officials remind the public that wild horses require training.

Prospective adopters must have sturdy corrals that are 20' by 20' or larger, at least 6 feet high for adults and 5 feet high for younger horses, and have a shelter attached.

Animals can be previewed on Friday, May 17 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday adoption hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and are a first come, first serve basis.

Adoption fees are $125 for animals less than three years old and $25 for older horses.  You can also take home a buddy for $25.

Directions: Take Water Street or Montgomery Street to E. Main Street.  Head east on East Main Street until you get to the fairgrounds.
