Eau Claire (WQOW) -- Eau Claire Express manager Dale Varsho sits down with News 18 Sports Director Bob Bradovich to talk about the upcoming Northwoods League season.
Wednesday, the Express announces that Eau Claire products Tyler Sparger and Tyler Hermann have both signed temporary contracts.
Sparger, a Memorial H.S. graduate, currently pitches at Minnesota State-Mankato, while Hermann, a North H.S. graduate, is an infielder at Indian Hills Community College who'll play at UW-Milwaukee next season.
About Hermann, who played for the Express last season on a temporary contract, Varsho says, "Exciting player, strong player, he's playing third base for them [Indian Hills], he can run, he can do a lot of things really well to help us out. He started the season with us last year, had a pretty good season, ended up slumping a little bit at the end for his temporary contract, but overall, he's a really good, high prospect player, I think."
Sparger, who started his college career at Indian Hills, has pitched in the NWL the last two seasons: Brainerd in 2011, and Lakeshore in 2012.
"Tyler Sparger is another one that's had two years of experience in the Northwoods League," says Varsho, "and he brings in a hard-throwing right-hander, and hopefully the draft works out for him, and he's another prospect that hopefully can sign professionally. It's kind of exciting to have two local kids that are well-deserved to play for the Eau Claire Express."
Varsho and Bradovich also talk about other players on the Express roster, the outlook for the 2013 season, the additional fan deck at Carson Park, and how Express alums are faring in professional baseball, including Washington Nationals pitcher Jordan Zimmermann.
