May snowstorm: City explains why all residential streets won't be plowed

Eau Claire (WQOW) - City plows were busy Thursday clearing 170 miles of primary and secondary roads in Eau Claire, but they will not hit all residential streets.

More than eight inches of snow fell in Eau Claire, which far surpasses the threshold of three inches the city uses to determine whether to clear side streets.  Eau Claire Street Maintenance Manager Steve Thompson says the city is bypassing the three-inch rule for a couple of reasons.  He said this time of year, the plows can do more damage to the streets.  They're concerned the blacktop will peel.  Thompson also said the snow is expected to melt within days.

Thompson said certain, critical residential streets will be plowed on Thursday night to allow for emergency vehicles to get through, if needed.
