Manitowoc man arrested for false report of missing canoeists

EAU CLAIRE (WKOW) -- A Manitowoc man has been arrested in connection with the report of two canoeists falling into the Chippewa River.

Tuesday, police and rescue crews in Eau Claire began a multi-agency search in the river, after a kayaker called police. The kayaker, Andrew M. Wallace, told dispatchers he had overturned his kayak while trying to rescue two canoeists in distress. He claimed those people were still in the river and had been swept downstream.

Wallace's information led to a massive search and rescue operation of the two canoeists. Personnel from Eau Claire Fire/Rescue, Township Fire/Rescue, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Mayo Clinic, Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department and Eau Claire Police Department all actively searched for the reportedly missing people.

An investigation by the Eau Claire Police Department, however, revealed Wallace provided false information and there were no canoeists at all. Wallace, 30, was arrested for Obstructing an Officer.
