Gov. Walker delays fishing opener in northern Wis.

CABLE, Wis. (AP) -- The annual Governor's Fishing Opener has been delayed due to more than a foot of snow in Bayfield County.

Deputy Tourism Secretary Dave Fantle says Gov. Scott Walker wants to fish Lake Namekagon and showcase the area under better and safer conditions. Fantle said Friday Walker hopes to reschedule soon.

The event was started in 1965 by then-Gov. Warren Knowles. Gov. Jim Doyle missed the fishing opener in 2006, when his mother died.

It's only been relocated once due to weather. In 1996, it was moved from Lake Namekagon to Eau Claire Chain of Lakes.

There is still up to 20 inches of ice on some northern lakes. The state Department of Natural Resources has advised caution on northern lakes when the big game fishing season starts Saturday.
