Minneapolis (WQOW) -- Rice Lake H.S. grad Wally Ellenson is continuing his two sport status at the University of Minnesota.
Ellenson appeared in nine games for the Gophers men's basketball his freshman season, averaging two points per game.
Ellenson's numbers are even more impressive this spring, as part of the Gophers track and field team. Ellenson's already cleared 7'-1.5" in the high jump, a personal record, which already qualifies him for the NCAA regional meet.
"I was surprised," Ellenson says, "I knew that I was doing a lot of technical things in high school and I thought I really understood the high jump, but I'm learning a lot more now. Basketball and high jump go hand in hand. I'm always jumping in basketball, always trying to get above the rim. So in high jump, it just correlates perfectly. I just jump right over the bar, pretend it is a rim."
Ellenson hopes to qualify for the 2016 U.S. Olympic team in the high jump.
