Local bait shop owner says this is a rare fishing opener - WQOW TV: Eau Claire, WI NEWS18 News, Weather, and Sports

Local bait shop owner says in almost 30 years he's never seen an opener like this

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The weather has produced an open question... How would it affect the fishing opener this weekend?  Friday, we have at least one answer, the governor has put his plans on hold.

The annual governor's fishing opener has been delayed because of more than a foot of snow in Bayfield County.  The state says the governor hopes to reschedule soon.

One local business owner says this will be the strangest fishing opener he's ever seen.  Mike Buroker, the owner of Buroker's Taxidermy Bait and Tackle, says this is his 28th fishing opener. In all his years running an Eau Claire bait shop he says he has never experienced a fishing opener quite like this.

Buroker says,"I've seen it snow on opening day but I've never seen it snow like this before opening weekend."

He says this is nothing compared to the lakes up north that are still frozen.  "I feel pretty lucky that we have open lakes here. That'll keep the guys home, they'll fish around here this weekend. I've heard stories that people are canceling their weekends up there and postponing their trips," says Buroker.

Even with the steady flow of business streaming in, Buroker says, "A normal opening weekend, would be crazy. From beginning to end it would be people out all day"

For some of the most avid anglers, even the frozen lakes won't stop them from taking on the northern terrain.

"I've fished since I was really little and my grandpa owns a resort up there and stuff and this is the first time, back to 63' that they've had ice on the lake. So that's going to be cool, we're going to try and just fish along the edge," says angler Chase Unbehaun.
