UW-Whitewater softball wins WIAC championship

ONALASKA, WI (WKOW) -- Katie Boyle and Bekka Houda tossed back-to-back four hitters as UW-Whitewater defeated UW-Oshkosh 2-1 in a semifinal and UW-Eau Claire 7-0 in the championship game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament at the Omni Center in Onalaska Sunday.
With the wins UW-W, 31-5, earns the league's automatic berth in the NCAA III championship tournament.  UW-Whitewater will host a NCAA III regional Thursday-Sunday at van Steenderen Field on the north end of campus.  The rest of the regional, and national, field will be announced Monday.

Boyle's four-hit pitching and Laura Eichenold's two out, two run single were the keys to Whitewater's win over Oshkosh.

Oshkosh got a runner on second with one out in the first, and had runners on first and second with one out, on two walks by Boyle, in the second -- but could not score.

In the bottom of the second, Samie Seamon's two out walk started Whitewater's rally.  Jo Jablonski followed with a single down the right field line put two on, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch.  Eichenold's single to center knocked in both runs, providing Boyle and the Warhawks all the offense they would need.

With two out in the fourth, Oshkosh's single and double plated the Titans run to make it a 2-1 game.

The Titans had a runner in scoring position in the fifth and sixth. With a runner on third with one out in the seventh, Boyle got a strikeout and a pop up to the catcher to end the game.

Boyle upped her record to 16-2,, walking four and striking out two. The sixteen wins is tied for ninth in the UW-W single season record book.  She has totaled 250 strikeouts in her career, fourth all-time. Oshkosh's Jill Vondrak, 7-4, also yielded four hits, with two walks and one strikeout in the duel.  Neither team had a batter with more than one hit.

Oshkosh, 25-11, will await word on a possible at-large berth in the NCAA III tournament.
