WI kindergartners' reading readiness


MADISON (WQOW) - New test results show that 11% of Wisconsin kindergarten students aren't ready for classroom reading lessons.

The test was given to students statewide, for the first time last fall. A spokesman for the DPI says the test is meant to help classroom teachers, and is not meant to compare students.

Statewide, the test showed that 89% of kindergartners have the early skills needed to learn to read. Those skills include recognizing letters and letter sounds.
