Community garden beginning in Chippewa Falls

Chippewa Falls (WQOW)- Access to healthy food is a growing concern.  Now an area hospital is working to change that.

Food insecurity means being unable to get enough nutritious food.  Nearly 9,000 people in Chippewa County fit into that category.

Hoping to shrink that number, Saint Joseph's Hospital has cleared out land in Chippewa Falls for a community garden.  Families who can't afford the cost to grow fresh produce will still be able to garden, thanks to grant money.  St. Joe's is also inviting service organizations to grow vegetables then donate the food to families who need it most.  Plot rental prices start at $20 for the season.

"At this time, we have 24 plots available.  We have approximately 12 of them that have been reserved.  We still have 12 available and if the need arises, we can make more available as well," explains Roger Elliott, who serves as the Director of Plant Services for Saint Joseph's Hospital.

If you would like to sign up for one of those remaining plots, you can call (715) 717-7331.
