Four businesses vying for Eau Claire’s only available regular liquor license

Eau Claire (WQOW)- Four Eau Claire businesses are in the running for the city's only available regular liquor license.

A city committee heard pitches Wednesday from owners who each want the liquor license that became available after The Red Parrot Bar closed its doors.  Businesses in the running include From the Vine, The Coffee Grounds, The Congressional and Johnny's Italian Steakhouse.  If a business doesn't get the license, it can apply for a reserve license, but that gets costly.

"For a small business, it really is cost prohibitive.  A regular license is somewhere between $500 and $600.  They have the reserve license available, but they are about $11,500 and it does just flat-out cost a lot of money," explains Eric Nelson, who owns The Coffee Grounds in Eau Claire.  "It takes profit from the business for the first while without a doubt."

The Eau Claire City Council will decide which of the four businesses will get the liquor license when it meets next Wednesday.
