Massei, Darrah and Massey named first-team All-Big Ten Softball



MADISON -- The records continue to fall for the Wisconsin softball team, as a school-record five members of this year's squad have earned All-Big Ten honors. Mary Massei, Cassandra Darrah and Whitney Massey earned first-team honors, while Kendall Grimm and Meghan McIntosh were named to the second-team. Maria Van Abel was selected as the team's Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Massei was a unanimous first-team outfield selection. Massei led the league in hits with 74 and ranked fourth with a .433 batting average. In league play, the junior ranked eighth with a .419 batting average and was second with 31 hits. Massei was named second-team All-Big Ten in 2011.
Darrah, a first-team selection at pitcher, finished second in league play with a 2.25 ERA and ranked fifth with a .211 opponent batting average. Darrah finished the regular season with a 23-5 record, tying former Badger Andrea Kirchberg for second on the UW single-season wins record list. Darrah earned second-team honors in 2012.
Massey made her second-consecutive appearance on the first-team list, earning honors at catcher this season. Massey led the league with 18 doubles during the regular season and set a UW single-season record with 12 home runs. The senior finished league play tied for second with seven home runs, ranked ninth with a .761 slugging percentage and sixth with 24 RBI.
Grimm, a second-team honoree in the outfield, posted a .391 batting average in league games, finishing second on the team with 25 hits during conference action. The senior played errorless ball, completing league play with a 1.000 fielding percentage. Grimm was a first-team selection in 2012.
McIntosh wrapped up her senior season with a 7-3 record in Big Ten action, recording a .196 league opponent batting average. McIntosh, a second-team selection, finished the league campaign sixth with a 2.72 ERA.
Van Abel, Wisconsin's Sportsmanship Award honoree, completed her sophomore campaign as the Badgers' starting centerfielder. Van Abel played in all 50 games for Wisconsin, recording a .360 batting average and playing perfect defense with a 1.000 fielding percentage.
The five All-Big Ten honorees and three first-team selections are the most ever in a single season for Wisconsin. In 2012, four members of the squad earned All-Big Ten honors, with two named first-team. In head coach Yvette Healy's three seasons, Wisconsin has earned 12 league awards.
Wisconsin (39-11 overall, 16-7 Big Ten) starts postseason play with a trip to Lincoln, Neb. for the Big Ten tournament. The Badgers will open play on Friday at 11:30 a.m. against the winner of the Northwestern/Indiana game on Thursday morning.
