Lawmakers take their shots at WEDC in audit hearing

MADISON (WKOW) -- Democratic lawmakers on the Joint Legislative Audit Committee are wasting no time blasting the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation at a pubic hearing Thursday morning.

The hearing is solely devoted to the report on WEDC released by the Legislative Audit Bureau last week that shows the agency violated a number of state statutes.

Officials from the LAB began testifying on their findings at 9:30 a.m.

Rep. Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee) got LAB officials to confirm that WEDC broke six state laws, many of which had to do with the tracking of loans and job creation efforts.

Rep. Kathleen Vinehout (D-Alma) says she is concerned that while WEDC told state auditors they have created somewhere around 5,000 jobs, none of those jobs have been actually verified by the agency.

Capitol Bureau Chief Greg Neumann is at today's hearing and will have live reports on 27 News at 5 and 6.
