WWII vet receives medals 70 years later

GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- A navy veteran from Green Bay is being honored for his military service, seven decades later.

Patrick Kennedy enlisted in the U.S. Navy when he was 17-years-old.

During his service, Kennedy helped the U.S. defeat the Japanese in the Philippines during World War II, reclaiming the islands and freeing prisoners of war.

70 years later, the Philippines gave the 89-year-old liberation and victory medals, along with a Philippine Presidential Citation ribbon.

"It's very humbling, because there are so many who can't be here to be recognized. And I guess there is a tremendous responsibility that whatever I could add to it, on their behalf, I'm beholden to do that," says Kennedy.

Kennedy says in all of his years, there's been no higher honor than to serve his country.
