Letter carriers collect food for annual Stamp Out Hunger Drive

MADISON (WKOW)-- Just weeks after Congress decided to keep Saturday postal delivery, postal workers are using this Saturday to collect food.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food drive is a nationwide effort that has collected more than 1.2 billion pounds of food since 1993.

They typically hold the drive the 2nd Saturday in May. That means this year would not have been affected by the recent efforts by the Postmaster General to eliminate Saturday delivery. That motion wouldn't have gone into affect until August.

Letter carriers are happy the federal government decided to keep Saturday delivery for the time being and allowing their annual food drive to keep going strong.

"If we didn't work on Saturdays then we wouldn't be collecting food on Saturdays, but right now happily to say that's a moot point," letter carrier and food drive coordinator Patrick Nee says.

Even though the food drive is a national event, all the food that is collected stays local. It is brought to one of several drop sites where it is then put to use by local food pantries.

The food is then stacked and sorted and eventually finds it's way to families in need. Letter carriers say the need is greater this time of year because several kids will no longer receive free breakfast and lunch with the school year coming to an end.

"I hope we continue strong and the contributions continue to flow in," Nee says.

In Dane County more than 165,00 pounds of food was collected last year.
