WI teen pushes for organ donation legislation

GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- One young woman is hoping her story will convince lawmakers to adopt a small budget provision that would have big implications for thousands in Wisconsin.

Chelsey Vertz talked to lawmakers at a budget hearing at Lambeau Field last month. The 19-year-old has Cystic Fibrosis and has been waiting on a double lung transplant for more than a year.

She now wants to raise more awareness about organ donation. "It's kind of nerve-wracking because they tell you never know when you're going to get the call. Have your bags packed. Have them ready to go," Vertz says.

Chelsey has helped push a budget provision through the joint finance committee. It would add a question on driver's license renewal forms, asking for a $2 donation to support awareness statewide.
