Badgers men's track finishes third at Big Ten championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 10-ranked Wisconsin men's track and field team came up short in its bid for the Big Ten Triple Crown on Sunday at the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, finishing third with 86.5 points. Nebraska claimed its first Big Ten title by scoring 131.5 points, with Minnesota (93 points) taking second.
The Badgers scored a top-three finish for the 23rd time in 30 seasons under head coach Ed Nuttycombe.
Highlighting the Badgers' day, junior Reed Connor claimed a runner-up finish in the 5000 meters in 13 minutes, 54.90 seconds and junior Danny Block was second in the shot put with a mark of 63 feet, 4 1/4 inches.
Also scoring for the Badgers on Sunday:
- Sophomore Austin Mudd, 800 meters (1:51.25)
- Senior Rob Finnerty, 1500 meters (4th, 3:48.53)
- Sophomore Alex Hatz, 1500 meters (6th, 3:49.50)
- Senior Grant Bughman, 400 hurdles (5th, 52.48)
- 4x400 relay (Babtunde Awosika, Drew Simmons, Garret Payne, Grant Bughman) (5th, 3:13.28)
- 4x100 relay (Dezmen Southward, Matt Kerswill, Babatunde Awosika, Garret Payne) (8th, 41.47)
Wisconsin finished with three individual Big Ten champions: senior Maverick Darling (10,000 meters), junior Alex Brill (3000 steeplechase) and sophomore Zach Ziemek (decathlon).
UW will send a number of athletes to compete in the 2013 NCAA West Preliminary Round, May 23-25 in Austin, Texas. Entries for that event will be announced Monday.
