Foss Fine Meats recalls bratwurst, meat loaf and summer sausage

MADISON (Press Release) - Foss Fine Meats, of Sparta, is voluntarily recalling its beer bratwurst, meat loaf and summer sausage products containing potential allergens that are not listed in the ingredient statement, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced.

The products contain nonfat dry milk, wheat and soy, all of which can cause serious reactions in people with an allergy or severe sensitivity to the ingredient.  No illnesses have been reported from consuming these products.

The following products containing non-fat dry milk which was not declared in the ingredient statement were sold over the counter or frozen in vacuum-sealed packages:

  • Beer Bratwurst – Fresh (6 per tray)
  • Beer Bratwurst – Precooked (6 per tray)
  • Brat Dogs – Fresh (6 per tray)
  • Beer Bratwurst with Kraut (6 per tray)

Meat loaf containing wheat and soy was sold frozen in vacuum-sealed packages and is missing the ingredient statement.

Summer sausage was sold as 1 to 1.5 pound pieces or as sliced deli meat and contains soy not listed on the ingredient statement.

All products were sold at the company's retail store in Sparta and were purchased by consumers on or before May 7, 2013. Consumers who have any of these products may return them to Foss Fine Meats, or discard them. Consumers and media with questions about this recall can contact store owner Mark Wells at 608-269-6456.

Symptoms in people with a wheat, soy or milk allergy may include swelling, itching or irritation of the mouth, nose, throat, eyes and skin; difficulty breathing; cramps, nausea or vomiting; diarrhea; or anaphylaxis.  While most people do not have food allergies, anyone who eats a specific food and experiences symptoms should consult a doctor.
