Fire at a wood pallet company in Chippewa County

Chippewa County (WQOW) - A fire at a pallet company caused some serious damage Monday night.

It happened Monday night around 9:00 p.m. at Walter Brothers Manufacturing.

The Cornell Fire Chief, Denny Klass, said when crews arrived on scene, the sawmill part of the business was entirely engulfed. That fire then spread to neighboring woods and the DNR had to be called in to assist.

Crews said because of the material inside the building the flames spread quickly. According to Klass, crews had a hard time keeping the fire out of a silo that collected dust.

There's still no word on what started the fire or a damage estimate.

Firefighters were called to the scene of a large fire north of Holcombe Monday night.

WQOW News 18 spoke to the woman who reported the fire at a wood pallet company off Highway 27.  She said she saw the fire around 9 p.m. and could see fireballs shooting high into the air.

WQOW News 18's Megan Wiebold spoke to a firefighter around 11:30 p.m. who told her the fire is mostly contained.  Traffic is moving along Highway 27.

We'll post more information as it becomes available.
