Rifle discharges striking Stanley man in neck

Stanley (WQOW) - A man is taken to the hospital after police say he accidentally shot himself early Tuesday morning.

Stanley police were called out around 1:30 a.m.  They say Eric Messing, 42, was shot in the neck with a .22 rifle. Witnesses told police he was moving the rifle when he tripped and the gun fired. Messing suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Stanley (Press Release) - On Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at approximately 1:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to 503 Madison Street, City of Stanley, for a male subject that had been struck by a bullet inside the residence. 

Upon arrival, officers determined a .22 caliber rifle was being moved inside the residence by Eric M. Messing, 42-years-old. Witnesses indicated Messing tripped while moving the firearm and the firearm discharged a single round into his neck causing a non-life-threatening wound. 

Messing was able to speak to officers and medical personnel on scene and confirmed the discharge was accidental.  Witnesses inside the residence also confirmed the accidental discharge.

Messing was transported by helicopter to Mayo-Eau Claire for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. 

The Stanley Police Department, Chippewa County Sheriff's Office, Stanley Fire Department and Boyd-Edson-Delmar ambulance responded to the scene quickly to help with this incident.  No other injuries were reported and no one else is believed to be directly involved in this incident.  Messing's current medical condition is not known.
