City to help Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds prep for summer

Chippewa Falls (WQOW) - They had to hit the fairgrounds running in Chippewa Falls because of the long winter.

There's a lot of work to do in a short amount of time to get the grounds ready for summer.

In order to help speed things along, the city of Chippewa Falls agreed to allow city equipment and workers to help.

"Equipment is going to be needed, as we have to address some of these utility issues in order to save money for the community's property here," said Rusty Volk, Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds Executive Director.

There's work to be done at the Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds in Chippewa Falls.

Thanks to an agreement with the city, improvement projects could soon be sped up. The Chippewa Falls City Council approved the use of city equipment and workers to be used by the fairgrounds. Workers would have to volunteer their time, but would be covered in case of emergency.

"The Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds has insurance, and we work with our insurance agency to ensure that any volunteers who work at the fairgrounds are covered. This goes as well for any equipment we may have from the city of Chippewa Falls," Volk explained.

While many smaller structures are just fine, one of the biggest is in trouble.

"We're going to need to move this ground away, so that water runs away from the building. Water runs off the roof and on to the side of the building. What it's doing is it has damaged the building," added Volk.

The fairgrounds could also use heavy equipment to replace aging water pipes, some of which have been here over 70 years.

The thought is that by helping the fairgrounds, all of Chippewa Falls stands to benefit.

"Businesses, foundations, individuals, non profits...the entire community came together to purchase the fairgrounds. Because the community owns the fairgrounds, It would be great if we could utilize some of the equipment the community owns to take care of this investment," Volk said.

The Northern Wisconsin State Fair begins Wednesday, July 10th.
