DNR: Don't disturb emerald ash borer boxes

MADISON (WKOW) –Agricultural officials are asking individuals that see a purple box hanging in the tree this summer to leave it alone.

If you see a purple box hanging in the tree this summer, agricultural officials are asking you to leave it alone.

Federal, state and local officials will put purple boxes in the trees to trap the emerald ash borer.  The goal is to find new infestations of the ash tree-killing insect and track its spread in Wisconsin.

State agricultural officials say as many 1,100 traps may be set in the next few weeks, mainly in countries where the insect has not yet been found.

The emerald ash borer was first found in Ozaukee County in 2008 and has since been found in 12 additional counties, including Brown, Crawford, Kenosha, La Crosse, Milwaukee, Racine, Rock, Trempealeau, Vernon, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha.
