Dalai Lama leads "Change Your Mind Change the World" event in Madison

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Dalai Lama shares his wisdom for making the world a better place. Thousands of people filled in the Overture Center in Madison Wednesday to hear what he had to say.

His Holiness led the "Change Your Mind Change the World" event. Both morning and afternoon sessions were sold out to a crowd eager to share a room with the spiritual leader of Buddhist Tibet and take in his world views. He was joined by scholars, environmentalists, and scientists. It was a high-powered brain storming session about how to make this world better, moderated by Arianna Huffington.

"I can say unequivocally that there's no more important conversation going on the planet than the conversation that has been going on at this conference," Huffington told the audience.

The panel talked about the ability to achieve well-being and interact with one another.

"Now today, the existing education institution only cares about knowledge. Now, that institution should take care about moral ethics," the Dalai Lama said.

He discussed the need for a secular moral education in young people. His Holiness also heard about research and concerns regarding the environment.

"Our energy consumption is affecting the entire earths climate, so we need to be mindful of that connection," panelist and environmental health leader Jonathan Patz said.

The Dalai Lama told the crowd change needs to start with them. "Should not think, I'm single person, the problem is huge I can't do much. The initiative must start from individual."

The messages resonated with the crowd. More than 2,000 people from all over filled the theater in each session.

"It was really inspiring, I've always wanted to hear the Dalai Lama speak," Jake Weiss of Appleton said.

According to the Dalai Lama's website, his next public appearance is scheduled for Friday in New Orleans.
