Teams competing in national softball championship give back to the community

Eau Claire (WQOW)- Eight teams competing in Eau Claire to be crowned national softball champions spent the day giving back to the community here in the Chippewa Valley.

The tournament may not start until Friday, but the fun started Thursday.  It's an NCAA tradition that teams spend a day doing community service in the tournament's host city. The teams played kickball with many different groups Thursday in Eau Claire and Altoona: including Special Olympics athletes, special needs students, and younger kids at the Altoona Early Childhood Special Education Center.

"We appreciate that they are giving back to the Eau Claire community during their time here by playing a game, getting our students excited about college, excited about athletics, and excited about community service," says Northstar Middle School Special Education Teacher Katie Geddes.

The tournament does begin Friday morning at 11 a.m. at Gelein Field in Carson Park.
