UW-Madison student arrested for starting fire in campus dorm

MADISON (WKOW) --- UW-Madison student, Brent E. Newman, 19, admitted to starting a fire in Sellery Hall early Saturday morning.

The fire started on the 9th floor of Sellery Hall on West Johnson Street.

At 2:15 a.m., UW-Madison Police and Madison Fire responded to fire alarms.

The building was evacuated.

Crews quickly found a bulletin board had been set on fire and were able to put it out.

UW Police determined through interviews, Newman had been disciplined a few hours earlier for allegedly urinating in a female shower stall.

They believ3e Newman set the fire in retaliation of being written up.

Newman was arrested and booked in the Dane County Jail and charged with negligent handling of burning materials and criminal damage to property.

Officials say no other damages to the building, other than the bulletin board.
