Altoona schools to practice evacuation drill Thursday

Altoona (Press Release) - Over the past several weeks, Altoona school district staff and students have practiced fire, tornado and lock‐down drills.

On Thursday of this week, district staff and students will practice yet again. This time, for the first time ever, students and staff will leave their classrooms and walk to their designated evacuation areas.

The Altoona Police Department will take advantage of this opportunity, using the evacuation period to conduct a tactical emergency drill within the schools.

We want the community to be informed of this undertaking: the evacuation, the police‐presence in the neighborhood and in the buildings. We also want the community to know that district officials take school safety issues seriously.

"Although it's a big undertaking, it is important that we practice. Practicing can bring to light issues with the plan that do not work, things that need to be changed and/or improved. This way in the case of a real evacuation we have the best plan possible to ensure the safety of everyone involved," Dr. Connie Biedron said.
