Luncheon held to promote and celebrate literacy

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) - In the Chippewa Valley, thousands of adults struggle with literacy. Tuesday, there was a big event to celebrate the work being done to change that.

Literacy Volunteers of the Chippewa Valley held its annual "Celebration of the Stars." It's a luncheon to recognize the countless hours students and tutors put in to wipe out illiteracy. Students received awards for their achievements and some read to the crowd.

Mike McHorney, the Assistant Director of Literacy Volunteers said, "This event really celebrates those adults who are trying to make a difference, and to live a life with literacy where they can be successful as citizens, workers, and family members."

WQOW's own Jerry Gallagher was presented with the Eric Wahl Making A Difference Award. The award is named in memory of Judge Wahl, who was very involved with Literacy Volunteers as a tutor. His wife was a founding board member of Literacy Volunteers.

Jerry received the award on behalf of WQOW's commitment to promote literacy through stories and events like the Scrabble Bee, which raises money for the organization.
