Bow hunting will not be allowed near Wisconsin schools

MADISON (WKOW) -- After months of controversy, a State Assembly committee has decided against a provision to allow bow hunting closer to schools.

Rep. Joel Kleefisch (R-Oconomowoc) authored a bill that would have scrapped a 1,700 foot distance requirement from schools and hospitals for hunters using a bow and arrow or crossbow.

But at Wednesday's executive session of the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources and Sporting Heritage, Rep. Kleefisch offered an amendment scrapping that portion of the bill.

"There was some heartburn over it, we worked closely across party lines and with the public to make sure this bill is palatable," Rep. Kleefisch told the committee.

The bill now moves forward to the full Assembly with only a provision that prohibits local governments from adopting further bow hunting restrictions.
