MOSCOW (WKOW) -- Slight tremors were felt in Moscow after a powerful 8.2 magnitude earthquake hits eastern Russia.

Marina Kolomiyets, spokeswoman for Obninsk's seismic station of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said Friday the epicenter was in the Sea of Okhotsk, east of the Russian coast and north of Japan. She said the quake registered 8.0 on the Richter scale.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude of 8.2.

A tsunami warning was issued for Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, but it has now been lifted.

The earthquake originated 375 miles underground. Some people in central Moscow were evacuated from buildings because of the tremors.

Tremors are extremely rare in Moscow, the last recorded instance was in 1977.

Russian news agencies also cited eyewitnesses reporting strong tremors across Siberia.
