Man rescued from river in alleged drunk driving crash

PLATTEVILLE TOWNSHIP (WKOW) -- A man is rescued from the water after deputies say he crashed his pick-up truck into a Grant County river.

Around 8:50 p.m. Friday night, the Grant County Sheriff's Office responded to Highway 81 at the Little Platte River in Platteville Township. Emergency crews found a 1995 Chevy pick-up truck overturned in the water. The man inside the truck, Clifton G. Schuler, 58, was trying to keep his head above water.

The sheriff's office says Schuler was eventually removed from the truck and transported to Southwest Health Center in Platteville.

An investigation showed the truck left the road on Quarry Lane and went over the embankment into the river. Based on evidence found, Schuler was arrested for OWI 1st Offense. He was also cited for Operating Without a Valid Driver's License and Operating a Motor Vehicle Left of Center.

The sheriff's office says citizens helped to stabilize the vehicle until the fire department and EMS units got there.
