Promotional mailer mistakenly offers customers $25,000 prize

MADISON (WKOW) -- A printing error has a number of people in the Madison area thinking they're big winners, only to find out it was a big mistake.

Metro Ford of Madison sent out 35,000 promotional mass mailers this month for a sales event. Some customers say a scratch-off game revealed they won $25,000 from the car dealership, but when customers tried to redeem the card the dealership said the event was canceled due to a printing error.

Customers, like Ken White from Marshall, were offered a $200 Walmart gift card for their troubles. White says it was a let down.

"You know, when you see that you've won, you would think that they'd stand behind it, so it was disappointing to find out that for whatever reason didn't," White says.

Metro Ford of Madison officials declined an interview, saying they consulted with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) and have apologized to customers. The car dealership posted a notice on their website alerting customers of the error, asking them to bring the mailer in to Metro Ford before the end of the month to exchange it for a gift card.

DOT officials tell 27 News they don't have the authority to require the dealership to pay the promotional prizes, but thought the decision to give out a gift card instead is fair. Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) also reviews promotional prize giveaways.

According to a Wisconsin state statute regarding prize notices, it appears the dealership may be responsible for the prizes, or may have to offer something of equal value.

A DATCP spokesperson said the department hasn't conducted an investigation into the contest, and cannot comment on whether it falls under that particular law.

Neither agency was available for an on camera interview on Tuesday.
