UPDATE: Wisconsin soldier awarded Silver Star Medal

Posted:

CAMP DOUGLAS (WKOW) -- A Wisconsin National Guard member received the Silver Star Friday, the third highest military decoration for valor.

First Sergeant Gregory Fulton earned recognition for leading a unit that helped Afghan forces under fire from insurgents in August of 2009.

Fulton shares the credit with his unit.

He's so humble that family members didn't know exactly why he received the medal until the ceremony.

"We're a team," says Fulton. "The majority of the military, it's a team event. You have to rely on others."

His wife Sandra says, "He'd rather focus on his unit. He just doesn't like a lot of attention on himself so we'll just be proud for him."

Fulton is the first Wisconsin National Guard member to receive the honor since World War Two.
