Sources say tentative deal reached on school voucher expansion

Posted:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin's private school voucher program would expand statewide but enrollment would be capped at no more than 500 students next year under the latest version of a deal being discussed by Gov. Scott Walker and Republican legislative leaders.

Details of the agreement were provided to The Associated Press on Thursday by two people involved in the negotiations. They requested anonymity because they didn't want to compromise progress on a deal.

Walker's spokesman Tom Evenson says negotiations are ongoing and there is no final deal.

The document provided to AP also shows public school spending would be allowed to increase by $150 per-student in each of the next two years. Walker proposed freezing funding.

Walker had proposed expanding vouchers to poor-performing schools. All districts would be in under the new plan.
