WI DOT warns motorists to watch for June deer

MADISON (WKOW) – Wisconsin transportation officials want to warn drivers to be on the lookout for deer next month.

Although car-deer crashes usually peak in the fall, the Department of Transportation says June is one of the most dangerous months for drivers because deer are on the move as they search for places to give birth.  The DOT says the young deer often separate from their mothers around the same time.

The agency says drivers should be vigilant during the early morning and evening hours, when deer are most active.  Drivers should also be aware that deer seldom run along.

If a driver spots a deer along the side of the road, DOT officials suggest slowing down and honking the horn with one long blast to frighten the animal away.
