MAUSTON (WKOW) -- Authorities say a woman was shot and killed, and another woman wounded in Mauston just past midnight Friday, with a suspect arrested a short time after the gunfire outside a bar.
Officials decline to release the identity of the victims, but Mauston Police Chief Mark Messer tells 27 News the wounded victim was taken by MedFlight helicopter to UW Hospital. A UW Hospital spokesperson says the victim is listed in critical condition.
Messer says the women were shot outside P.J.'s Bar and Grill in the 300 block of State Street. The downtown location remains cordoned off with police tape and patrolled by officers.
Audrey Hill of Mauston is the fatal victim's cousin and tells 27 News she also knows the suspect. Hill says she was unaware of any rift between her cousin and the man. She states family members are trying to cope with her cousin's violent death, and says the victim leaves behind two young children.
Hill says she's acquainted with the suspect, who has made her feel ill at ease.
"From the first time I met him, I didn't like him," Hills tells 27 News. "There's something wrong with him."
Jamey Edgerton tells 27 News she previously dated the suspect, and saw him hours before the shooting, describing him as intoxicated, and unusually distant. But Edgerton says the suspect was a compassionate man.
Several sources with knowledge of the investigation say the suspect has served as an Air Force reservist. In a 2005 web post to honor the memory of a Wisconsin soldier who died in Afghanistan, the suspect listed himself as with the U.S. Air Force at a base in Georgia.
Messer says the suspect may make an appearance in Juneau County court Monday.
