MADISON (WKOW) -- Gayle Viney with Dane County Humane Society says 90 animals were adopted Saturday.

She says the local humane society does not have any kittens or dogs available anymore, but they still have 50 adult cats who are looking for homes.

MADISON (WKOW) -- If you are looking for a new furry companion, this weekend is the perfect time to help an animal find a home, and you can do it for free.

Dane County Humane Society is participating, for the first time, in Maddie's Pet Adoption Days on Saturday and Sunday. Gayle Viney, with DCHS, says Maddie's Pet Adoption Days is held to empty community shelters, increase awareness of shelter animals and their need for loving homes, and to shed light on the tireless efforts of the shelters and rescue organizations that work so hard to save the lives of countless dogs and cats every day.

The adoption event honors the memory of the organization's namesake, a miniature schnauzer named Maddie. Nearly 7,000 dogs and cats have been adopted during Maddie's Pet Adoption days in the past three years. The event has only been held in Northern California in those years, so Maddie's is hoping that all together, more than 5,000 dogs and cats will find loving homes this month.

This Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., dog and cat adoptions will be free to qualified homes. Viney says although the animals will be free, the adoption process is still in place. She says they want to make sure the animal is going to a good home.

Viney says they do expect a lot of people at the event, and just ask that everyone be patient. She says people should be ready to take the animal home that day, and says there are no holds.

Dane County Friends of Ferals, Angel's Wish, Friends of Noah, and Rock County Humane Society are also a part of this event. Click here for a list of times and locations.

Viney strongly recommends visiting GiveShelter.org for a list of helpful tips and links to the participating organizations, available animals, and locations.
