Starbucks bans smoking near stores

MADISON (WKOW) -- Coffee lovers who are also smokers may have to find a new place to light up.

Starting Saturday, June 1, Starbucks won't allow people to smoke within 25 feet of stores, even with electronic cigarettes.

27 News visited the Capitol Square Saturday to see what people in Madison think about the new policy.

"I actually agree with the policy because I don't like walking by a business, especially downtown, and having to inhale the smoke of others," said Starbucks regular, Bethany Allen.

Others had a different opinion.

"Since we're all citizens with the same rights, maybe the law, the state, should regulate that versus a business," said Livia Butek from Madison.

Starbucks is the first chain with this kind of policy. It affects stores in the U.S. and Canada.
