Boy in coma after van sinks in Chippewa River

LAKE HALLIE (WKOW) -- A toddler who was rescued by witnesses after a van rolled into the Chippewa River on Saturday is now in a medically induced coma.

WQOW-TV reports the van went into the river in Lake Hallie, Wisconsin, which is near Eau Claire. It happened around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

WEAU-TV reports the driver was attempting to take a boat out of the river and the current swept the van away with 3-year-old Logan Buchli inside.

Three people jumped into the water to save the boy. One person used a rock to shatter the back window of the van and pulled Logan out. A witness performed CPR until police arrived.

Branden Linhard tells WQOW-TV he heard a scream for help while fishing nearby.

"I jumped in there, tried to get the poor little boy out," Linhard says. "I just looked at it as it was my own boy, and honestly I'm still trying to picture it all in my head. My son's two, I just looked at it as if it were my own family member in that vehicle and went in."

Family says Logan was in an induced coma Sunday at a hospital in Rochester, MN. Logan's uncle had been able to pull Logan's sister from the van but by the time he went back for Logan the van was already submerged.
