Nearly 2,800 told to evacuate amid CA wildfire

PALMDALE, CA (WKOW) – Officials in California estimate that nearly 3,000 people from about 700 homes are under evacuation orders as a wildfire continues to spread north of Los Angeles.

At a news conference on Sunday, LA County Sheriff's Lt. David Coleman said that evacuees wouldn't be able to return home until at least Monday and possibly Tuesday.

The fast-growing fire had burned about 40 square miles of brush in canyons and mountains about 50 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

Authorities say the fire already destroyed six homes and damaged about 15.  As of Monday morning, the fire is only 20 percent contained and has burned about 34 square miles.
