Final committee action scheduled on Gov. Walker's budget

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Legislature's budget committee is slated to take votes on income tax cuts, private school voucher expansion, public education funding and Medicaid.

Those major pieces of Gov. Scott Walker's budget were on tap for the final scheduled day of Joint Finance Committee meetings on Tuesday.

Walker and Republican legislative leaders have been working in secret to strike deals that will get the budget through both the Senate and Assembly. Republicans have a majority in both houses.

Democrats are calling on Republicans to reject the voucher expansion and tax cut plans and instead invest more money in public schools.

Democrats also want Republicans to accept a federally funded Medicaid expansion, something Walker has rejected and has said he expects to be passed by the Legislature.
