Fifth grader honored with AAA Lifesaving Medal

MADISON (WKOW) --  Madison elementary school student joins an elite group of students who receive the AAA  Lifesaving Medal nationally.

Cyrus Lashore, a 5th grader at Schenk Elementary, received the prestigious award Tuesday.  AAA honors student's lifesaving heroics while on duty as a AAA School Safety Patroller.  Only 407 students have received the medal since it was first awarded to a member in 1949.

Cyrus was honored with the medal for his quick thinking during a life threatening situation.  While patrolling, he grabbed a younger student's backpack to pull him from the path of an oncoming car.

Besides the AAA Lifesaving Medal, Cyrus also received recognition on the court during the AAA Safety Patrol Night at the Bucks game March 17, and won a free five day trip to Washington, D.C. last month.

The AAA School Safety Patrol program has helped improve student travel to and from school for more than 93 years.  Currently, more than 620,000 students in 31,500 schools across the country participate in the program, and the AAA Lifesaving award is designed to celebrate the remarkable efforts of these students.

Former members include Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, as well as several Supreme Court Justices, U.S. Senators, governors, and U.S. Olympic gold medalists.
