Mineral Point man in custody for Grant County shooting


GRANT COUNTY (WKOW) -- Grant County Sheriff's received a report of a shooting shortly before 9:30 Tuesday night.

The victim, 34-year-old Robert Hess, of Janesville, was shot in the stomach on Rock Road in Big Patch, south of Platteville.  Hess had been a witness of a confrontation between two other men, Sean Fortney, of Platteville, and Jeremy Stonestreet, of Mineral Point.

Fortney had thrown a rock through the rear window of Stonestreet's vehicle.  Stonestreet then fired once from a 9mm handgun striking Hess in the stomach.  35-year-old Stonestreet fled the scene. 

Hess was transported to Southwest Health Center by Platteville EMS and then later Med-Flighted to Madison.  He is listed in good condition with no life threatening injuries.

About an hour after the incident, Mineral Point police were able to take Jeremy Stonestreet into custody.  He was transported to the Grant County Jail where he is held without bond on charges of first degree recklessly endangering safety.  Stonestreet is cooperating with authorities on the investigation.

The Grant County Sheriff's Department was assisted at the scene by the Platteville EMS and the Platteville Fire Department.  Also assisting were the Mineral Point Police Department and the Iowa County Sheriff's Department.
