Burnside faces trial in jogger's death


MADISON (WKOW) -- A Dane County judge bound over for trial a Lutheran bishop in the collision death of a jogger in Sun Prairie.

59-year old Bruce Burnside waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Authorities say Burnside drunkenly slammed his SUV into 52-year old Maureen Mengelt of Sun Prairie in April, as Mengelt ran on Windsor Street. Officials say Burnside drove off, and was arrested at a nearby gas station.

Burnside faces trial on three felony charges, including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, and hit and run resulting in death.

Burnside has stepped down as the leader of his Lutheran Synod.
