Man dies after being trapped under burning skid loader

BELMONT TOWNSHIP (WKOW) -- The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call Wednesday night reporting a skid steer accident, fire and entrapment.

The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. along County Highway XX in Belmont Township.  Deputies, along with Platteville Fire Department and Platteville ambulance personnel responded.

Preliminary investigation reveals the operator of a skid steer loader had dug a hole for purposes of placing refuse/rubbish into it for burning.  While the materials were burning, the skid steel loader was too close and went over the edge of the hole and began sliding into the fire.

The 59-year-old operator stepped out of the loader and became pinned underneath one of the wheels of the machine.  The skid steel loader then became fully engulfed.

Paul Cullen, who resides in Shullsburg, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafayette County Coroner, Virginia Douglas.
