Truck driver charged with bomb threat

Dunn County (WQOW) - A Pennsylvania truck driver claims what he said at a Menomonie convenience store was a joke, but he's now been charged with a felony.

Steve Eliou has been charged with making a bomb threat.  Investigators say he told others the Army fuel tanker he was hauling was stolen and he planned to drive to New York to blow up half the city.

He allegedly said this when he was stopped at a convenience store in Menomonie last month.  Police say when they arrested him, Eliou told them he was just joking because he thought the two men in the store were looking at him with suspicion.  Police told him, in today's world, you cannot make threats about blowing up a city.

Investigators say the fuel tanker had been picked up at Camp Ripley in Minnesota and was on its way to New Hampshire.  It was not stolen and was empty.

If he's convicted, Eilou could face up to three and a half years behind bars.
